Damascus Steel Ring with Opal Inlay
Bring colour to the distinctive grain of Damascus steel with a handmade opal inlay ring from True North Forge. Choose a fine 1mm channel for a subtle flash of colour or a wider 2mm inlay for a bolder contrast against the etched steel. Made to order in our Aberdeenshire workshop, this design combines Graeme's ring-making with Katie's hand-finished opal inlay work.
Choose your opal colour and inlay width
The channel is filled by hand with crushed opal and sealed beneath a clear finish. As light moves across the ring, the opal shows different colours and reflections alongside the darker detail of the Damascus pattern. Choose a 1mm inlay for a fine line of colour or a 2mm channel to give the opal more prominence.
Your choice of base colour matters too. A dark base can give the opal stronger contrast, while a lighter base can create a brighter overall look. Our Opal & Base Colour Guide shows how these combinations change the finished appearance.
Six Damascus steel patterns
Choose the steel pattern that best suits your style. Esk and Bervie offer closely detailed grain, Crynoch has flowing twists, Findon shows straighter layers, Cowie features structured concentric circles and Dee has more irregular circular formations. Etching reveals the layers in the steel, so each ring has its own natural variation.

Court or Flat profile
Choose a Court profile for a gently rounded, traditional wedding band or a Flat profile for a straighter, more contemporary silhouette. Both styles display the Damascus grain around the opal inlay. You can also select your preferred width and finish to make the design your own.
Made and inlaid by hand in Scotland
Graeme machines and finishes the ring from layered 304L and 316L stainless steels, preparing the channel for its inlay. Katie then creates the opal inlay by hand, arranging the crushed material and sealing it with a clear finish. The result brings together two distinct stages of work in our small Scottish workshop.
Engraving and the inside of your ring
Standard internal engraving is included if selected. For handwriting engraving, please contact us first to check whether the inscription will fit. If you choose engraving, we polish away the etched Damascus pattern on the inside of the band to create a smooth surface for your inscription. The patterned exterior and opal inlay remain unchanged.
Sizing, delivery and care
A free ring sizer is available so you can confirm your size before making begins, and free tracked UK delivery is included. To clean your ring, use mild soap and warm water, then dry gently with a soft cloth.

What is the best alternative metal for a wedding ring?
There is no single best metal. It depends on your preference for weight, finish and appearance. Titanium is extremely lightweight, Damascus Steel features unique layered patterns, Black Zirconium offers a deep black finish and Stainless Steel provides strength with a classic silver tone. What is the thickness of the ring?
Our rings are crafted with an approximate thickness of 2 mm. This provides a balanced feel that is substantial enough for durability while remaining comfortable for everyday wear. Each ring is shaped and finished by hand, so there may be very slight variations, but all are designed to maintain a consistent and comfortable profile.
How can I check my size before ordering?
There are several ways to confirm your size: you can be measured at any jeweller and ask for the internal diameter, order a ring gauge yourself and let us know the result, use a ring that already fits and send it to us, or request one of our free ring sizers at checkout.

What happens after I place my order?
After you order, we review your details and begin crafting your ring. If anything needs clarifying, we’ll contact you directly. Once complete, your ring is carefully packaged and sent via tracked UK delivery. You’ll receive tracking details as soon as it’s dispatched.
How long does it take to make a ring?
Most rings are ready within 2–3 weeks, but we recommend allowing 4 weeks before your wedding. Need it faster? Just let us know.
Is engraving included?
Engraving is always free. We can add names, dates, or even your own handwriting inside your wedding ring. To know more about handwriting engraving, take a look at this blog. . If the option is showing on the product listing, it is engravable.
Who actually makes my ring?
Every ring is made to order in our Scottish workshop by hand by Graeme, or G as he is known. We don’t outsource production or hold bulk stock. Your ring is crafted individually once your order is placed, then finished, checked and prepared for dispatch.
What are your return policies?
Because each ring is made to order in your chosen size and finish, returns are not available once production begins. We provide a complimentary ring sizer before crafting to ensure a confident fit.
